Capacity Inc.’s President—a Semi-Finalist to Share Her ‘Aha’ moment!

On behalf of Mutual of Omaha, thank you for participating in the 2010 aha moment tour. You were part of more than 1,000 people who shared their inspiring stories with us. Once again, because of the overwhelming response to the aha moment tour, we have decided to ask the general public to pick their favorite moments – the final 10 of which will become Mutual of Omaha’s 2011 national TV commercial campaign.

Congratulations! Your story has been selected as one of the semi-finalists. Your aha moment will appear alongside 74 others on http://www.ahamoment.com/vote , where visitors to the site will have the chance to vote for their favorites.

The first round of voting will begin on October 1st and continue through October 15th. After the first round, the top-25 vote getters will win an ipod Nano and move on to the final round of voting, which will begin on October 18th and end on October 31st. Check the website on October 18th to see which moments made the top-25. The top-10 favorite aha moments will be featured in Mutual of Omaha’s 2011 nationwide TV ads, which will begin airing early next year.

If you don’t wish to participate or be considered in the online voting please respond to this email and let us know. If you are interested in participating in the survey, however, we encourage you to tell your family and friends to go to http://www.ahamoment.com/vote starting October 1st and vote for their favorite aha moment!

Good luck! Regardless of the outcome, we hope that the campaign, using real stories from real people just like you, will inspire others to realize and act upon their own aha moments.

Thank you!

The 1932 Soviet poster dedicated to the 8th of March holiday. The text reads: “8th of March is the day of rebellion of the working women against kitchen slavery” and “Down with the oppression and narrow-mindedness of household work!”. Originally in the USSR the holiday had a clear political character, emphasizing the role of the Soviet state in the liberation of women from their second-class-citizen status.

Read about The Urban Market Initiative!

Capacity Inc. is dedicated to the advancement of women, girls and children. Our mission is to scale out best practice models that have proven to solve broad based challenges confronting the female gender. In the event we identify a need, but not a model we will research and develop a program model.

Lexington’s first Urban Market is designed to support current and create new women businesses. It will provide exciting opportunities for entrepreneurs and non profit organizations. Every person should have the opportunity to live their dream and every community should support that dream. It is proven when women unleash their potential, communities thrive. Capacity Inc. wants to offer women an opportunity to grow a business without a huge overhead or to explore creating a new business without making an unreasonable financial sacrifice. The growth of their business or the creation of a new one will also lead to the creation of jobs. Our organization is working hard to address the unemployment issue. In addition to women, we also want non profits to have an opportunity to sell goods as a means to raise funds for their organization, while spreading the news about their services.

The Urban Market is designed to bring a community together, to lift the communities’ conscious level regarding who they purchase from and what they purchase. On a small scale, it is about purchasing locally. On a large scale, we advocate the development of local consumer products which will increase jobs and community stability. Every community has the potential to create and sell goods at a local level. The Urban Market focuses on organic origins and holistic products, in addition to supporting female business owners and entrepreneurs through collaborative and cost effective efforts.

As a community educator and developer for 25 years, I have seen what occurs when communities, “start with what they know and use what they have.” The Urban Market is about being resourceful, reinventing and revitalizing; women, family, work and community. Lorillard Lofts was an old tobacco warehouse renovated into residential living spaces. Twenty lofts remain to be purchased. While space is sitting empty, current women businesses are not expanding locations or products; other women are working out of their homes or not starting businesses due to costly overhead. While working from the home or one location is warranted, a grassroots presence in the community, in addition to face to face social marketing is crucial. Also, facilitating the expansion of a successful business through the Urban Market, or beginning a new one, leads to additional employment. A collaborative effort within physical space, such as The Market, creates synergy and assists with the success of businesses.

Communities must make entrepreneurship practical and possible. By utilizing available space, we create a presence and or extension for current, new and future businesses. The cost to customers is less because you are buying locally and the advantage to the community is huge, as you are giving back to the local economy. Beyond the advantage of supporting women businesses growth and the local economy, is the benefit to the customer. These women are dedicated to their business. This is an extension of themselves and they aim to recruit and retain customers by taking the time to assist them with their purchase, they want to get to know their customer and they will continue to value their customer!

At the same time, Capacity Inc. will assist the vendors in the Urban Market with website development and joint marketing efforts, reaching beyond the community and ultimately creating a model for other communities to implement The Urban Market worldwide.

Our vision of The Urban Market is one of an indoor European Market. We hope to offer an additional venue for; The Farmers Market, Florists, Bakers, self and home improvement, specialty shops, artists, health and wellness and more. Monthly themes will be featured and we will have workshops, exhibitions and entertainment along with a growing variety of vendors.

The top priority criteria for vendors is; you are a woman owner or manager of a business, or that you sell products independently or as part of a franchise from your home, you aspire to begin a new business and want to test the market or you are a non profit that offers services to women, girls and children. The $50.00 monthly fee includes the booth for the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10:00 AM – 7:00PM and an exclusive for your product determined by first come first served. The first Urban Market date is Dec. 12, and space is still available.

Every vendor submitting their payment by the 1st of each month will be included in all advertising for each Market per month.

The text below was written in the blog before, but in case you are lost…

Capacity Inc. held an Eco-friendly designer showcase in the Lorillard Lofts.  We wanted to hold a fund raising event that was fun, inventive and exciting.  We were successful, in the fact that we raised around $1,000.00 for our organization and created amazing social links and networking opportunities.  We hope to have other green designer showcases in future places such as Louisville and Chicago.

Capacity Inc. is a new non-profit that focuses on the advancement of women and children all around the world.  We want to make a difference locally and therefore, supported local designers, vendors and specialized services during Naturally Chic.

Future project include creative job solutions for unemployed women of ‘The Bluegrass.’  We also are working with Central Baptist to employ women and are seeking other employers and educators to lift up women in the Bluegrass.

Look for the final designs in my next blog!

just for funzes.

For a long while I made cartoons, and I wanted to start making more.  I have the equivalent to writers block for cartoon creation. silly drawling block? oh wells, for now I will just say…

In other news, Capacity Inc., is meeting this week to discuss long term goals and what not.  That is really exciting!  We should be coming up with some great action plans soon.  A lot of great ideas are brewing between the organization and the wonderful people we met through the Naturally Chic event.  Maybe we can all work together to make the world a better place.
